The ATMXT641TD-ABR from Microchip Technology is an automotive-grade maXTouch capacitive touchscreen controller based on adaptive sensing technology. It supports both mutual- and self-capacitance sensing, with up to 32 X transmit lines, 20 Y receive lines, and 640 touchscreen nodes for automotive and industrial human-machine interfaces.

The controller tracks up to 16 concurrent touches in real time and allows up to 32 nodes to be allocated as mutual-capacitance touch keys. Adjacent Key Suppression technology helps prevent unintended neighboring key activations. With a 5.5mm electrode pitch, Microchip specifies a reference touchscreen size of approximately 8.17 inches at a 16:10 aspect ratio.

Advanced touch features include moisture and water compensation, glove operation, hover detection, palm and large-touch suppression, and noise-rejection algorithms. Under the specified conditions, the device can avoid false touches caused by condensation or water drops up to approximately 22mm in diameter while maintaining single-finger tracking.

The device provides a reporting rate of up to 250Hz for a single touch, while the typical reporting rate with 10 touches is at least 60Hz. Initial first-touch latency from idle can be less than 25ms, depending on system configuration and sensor construction.

Host communication can use either I²C or SPI. The I²C interface supports Standard Mode up to 100kHz, Fast Mode up to 400kHz, and Fast-mode Plus up to 1MHz, while the SPI interface supports operation up to 8MHz. An interrupt output and dedicated SPI debug interface are also provided.

The digital core and analog supplies operate at a nominal 3.3V, while VddIO supports approximately 1.8V to 3.3V operation. An integrated voltage-doubler option can raise the X-line drive supply to approximately twice Vdd to improve touchscreen signal-to-noise performance.

The mXT641TD-AB version is AEC-Q100 Grade 2 qualified for an operating-temperature range of −40°C to +105°C. Microchip also states that the device was developed using Automotive SPICE Level 3-certified processes and is CISPR 25 compliant for mutual- and self-capacitance measurements.

The ATMXT641TD-ABR uses a 100-pin TQFP package measuring 14mm × 14mm × 1mm with a 0.5mm lead pitch. The “R” ordering designation specifies tape-and-reel packaging. The QFP package is rated MSL 3.
