The Texas Instruments MSP430AFE253IPWR is an ultra-low-power mixed-signal microcontroller designed for metering and precision measurement applications. It features a 16-bit MSP430 RISC CPU operating at up to 12MHz, along with 16KB Flash memory and 512B RAM, making it suitable for energy meters, monitoring equipment, sensing systems and low-power data acquisition.

A key feature of the MSP430AFE253 is its integration of three independent 24-bit sigma-delta ADCs with differential PGA inputs, enabling high-resolution acquisition of voltage, current and other analog signals. The MCU also integrates a 16-bit Timer_A, 16-bit hardware multiplier, watchdog timer and 11 GPIOs for measurement, processing and control functions.

Serial communication is provided through a USART interface that can be configured by software for UART or SPI operation. The device operates from a 1.8V to 3.6V supply and supports five low-power modes. Typical active current is approximately 220μA at 1MHz and 2.2V, standby current is approximately 0.5μA, and RAM-retention off-mode current is approximately 0.1μA. Wake-up from standby takes less than 1μs.

The MSP430AFE253IPWR is supplied in a 24-pin TSSOP (PW) surface-mount package measuring approximately 7.8 × 6.4mm and operates from -40°C to +85°C. The “R” ordering suffix uses large tape-and-reel packaging with 2,000 units per reel. TI currently lists the device as active and RoHS/REACH compliant.
