The SN65HVD231DR from Texas Instruments is a single-channel 3.3V high-speed CAN transceiver designed to interface a CAN protocol controller in an MCU, DSP or processor with the differential CANH/CANL bus. It complies with the ISO 11898-2 High-Speed CAN physical-layer standard and supports signaling rates up to 1Mbps.
The device operates from a 3.0V to 3.6V supply, making it suitable for direct connection to 3.3V controllers. Its recommended CAN-bus common-mode range is -2V to +7V, while individual bus terminals support -2.5V to +7.5V under recommended operating conditions. The device can also withstand common-mode transients of ±25V.
The RS pin supports high-speed operation, adjustable slope control and low-power operation. Grounding RS enables maximum-speed switching, while an external resistor can reduce driver edge rates and electromagnetic emissions. TI specifies approximately 15V/µs with a 10kΩ resistor and approximately 2V/µs with 100kΩ.
A key feature of the SN65HVD231 is its ultra-low-current sleep mode. Driving RS high disables both the transmitter and receiver, reducing typical supply current to only 40nA, with a maximum specification of 1µA. Typical supply current during normal dominant or recessive operation is approximately 10mA.
The CAN driver provides approximately 2V typical dominant differential output, while the receiver provides differential input hysteresis of approximately 100mV. High bus-input impedance allows up to approximately 120 nodes on one CAN network.
Bus-pin ESD protection exceeds ±16kV HBM. Additional protection features include thermal shutdown, open-circuit fail-safe operation, cross-wire protection, loss-of-ground and overvoltage protection, plus glitch-free power-up and power-down behavior for hot-plug applications.
The exact SN65HVD231DR is supplied in an 8-pin SOIC (D) package measuring approximately 4.9 × 6.0mm and is rated for -40°C to +85°C operation. The DR ordering option uses 2500-piece large tape-and-reel packaging, with NiPdAu lead finish, MSL Level 1 at 260°C, and RoHS/REACH compliance. TI currently lists the exact part as ACTIVE.
