The Microchip LAN8720A-CP-TR is a low-power, single-port 10BASE-T/100BASE-TX Ethernet physical-layer transceiver (PHY) compliant with IEEE 802.3 and IEEE 802.3u standards. It communicates with an Ethernet MAC through a reduced-pin-count RMII interface and is suitable for embedded networking, routers, network printers, digital televisions, set-top boxes, test equipment, and telecommunications applications. The PHY supports 10Mbps and 100Mbps Ethernet, together with Auto-Negotiation, automatic polarity detection and correction, and HP Auto-MDIX. HP Auto-MDIX allows the device to work with either straight-through or crossover Ethernet cables, simplifying system connectivity.
Microchip’s flexPWR® architecture provides a variable 1.6V to 3.6V LVCMOS I/O voltage range and an integrated 1.2V regulator. The device can operate from a single 3.3V supply, or the internal regulator can be disabled for use with an external high-efficiency core supply. Multiple low-power modes, integrated power-on reset, and two status LED outputs are also provided.
For RMII clocking, the LAN8720A can accept an external 50MHz reference clock or use a low-cost 25MHz crystal or clock source to generate a 50MHz REF_CLK output for the MAC. It also supports SMI management, loopback modes, and link-status-change wake-up detection.
The exact LAN8720A-CP-TR version is the extended-commercial device specified for 0°C to +85°C in the official datasheet. It is supplied in a 24-pin 4 × 4mm QFN/VQFN package on tape and reel; Microchip Direct currently lists 5,000 devices per reel for this orderable part.
