The ADUM1250ARZ-RL7 from Analog Devices is a hot-swappable dual bidirectional digital isolator designed for I²C interfaces. The ADuM1250 provides two non-latching bidirectional channels, allowing both SDA and SCL to cross the isolation barrier without splitting each I²C signal into separate transmit and receive paths.

The device uses Analog Devices iCoupler® chip-scale transformer isolation technology and is compatible with isolated I²C, SMBus, and PMBus interfaces.

Both isolation sides operate from 3.0V to 5.5V supplies, supporting common 3.3V and 5V logic systems and allowing different supply voltages on the two sides of the isolation barrier.

The ADuM1250 supports data rates of up to 1000kHz / 1MHz. Under the recommended operating conditions, ADI specifies a 40pF Side 1 capacitive load and up to 400pF on Side 2; bus capacitance and pull-up resistance must be considered carefully for high-speed operation.

Integrated hot-swap circuitry helps prevent bus glitches when an unpowered card is connected to an active bus. Both supplies also include undervoltage-lockout startup behavior to prevent the signal channels from inadvertently pulling the I²C bus low during power-up or power-down.

The isolation barrier is rated to 2500Vrms under UL 1577, while DIN EN IEC 60747-17 specifications include a 560Vpeak VIORM rating. Minimum external clearance and creepage distances are both 4.0mm.

Common-mode transient immunity is specified at 25kV/µs minimum and 35kV/µs typical. Side 2 provides up to 30mA current-sink capability under the specified conditions.

Typical supply current for the ADuM1250 is 2.8mA on Side 1 and 2.7mA on Side 2 at 5V, or approximately 1.9mA and 1.7mA respectively at 3.3V.
