The MP9989GS-Z from Monolithic Power Systems is a fast-turn-off intelligent synchronous rectifier designed for flyback converters. It integrates a 100V power MOSFET and can replace a conventional secondary-side rectifier diode to reduce conduction loss, improve conversion efficiency, and increase power density.
The integrated MOSFET has a typical on-resistance of 10mΩ and a specified maximum of 12.5mΩ at a 2A drain current and 25°C junction temperature. The control circuit regulates the internal switch’s forward voltage drop to 40mV typical and turns the MOSFET off before the drain-to-source voltage reverses.
The MP9989 generates its own supply through the SENSE pin and an internal linear regulator, eliminating the need for an auxiliary transformer winding. It supports both high-side and low-side synchronous rectification and can operate in applications with output voltages extending down to 0V.
The controller supports continuous-conduction mode, discontinuous-conduction mode, and quasi-resonant flyback operation. Internal slew-rate and ringing-detection circuitry helps prevent false MOSFET turn-on caused by demagnetization ringing during DCM and quasi-resonant operation.
Typical quiescent current is 110μA, with a specified maximum of 135μA. At a 100kHz switching frequency, operating current is 4mA typical and 6mA maximum. The typical turn-on threshold is −80mV, with approximately 20ns turn-on delay and 25ns turn-off delay.
The MP9989GS-Z is supplied in an SOIC-8 surface-mount package. The internal MOSFET has an absolute-maximum continuous drain-current rating of 14.9A at a 25°C case temperature; this is not the same as the converter’s continuous output-current rating. For a typical universal-input adapter, MPS generally recommends an output-current rating of approximately 4A, subject to thermal and power-loss analysis.
