The VN920SPTR-E from STMicroelectronics is a single-channel intelligent high-side power switch based on ST’s VIPower M0-3 technology. The platform integrates a power MOSFET with logic, current limiting, protection and diagnostic circuitry for automotive and other grounded-load switching applications.
ST’s M0-3 high-side-driver architecture is designed for operation in automotive supply environments up to approximately 36V. Undervoltage shutdown occurs around 5.5V, while overvoltage protection disables the power stage around 36V. The platform also incorporates an internal VCC clamp of approximately 41V for low-energy supply transients.
For the VN920SP, ST specifies an active current-limitation range of 30A to 50A, with a 45A typical limit. This specification describes the device’s protective short-circuit current limit and must not be interpreted as a 45A continuous-output rating. Continuous load capability depends strongly on PCB thermal design, ambient temperature and power dissipation.
The VN92 family provides an analog current-sense output proportional to load current, allowing a microcontroller ADC and external sense resistor to monitor the connected load. ST documents a current-sense ratio of approximately 4400 to 5250 for the VN92 family under specified test conditions.
Integrated protection includes current limiting, undervoltage shutdown, overvoltage shutdown, thermal shutdown and automatic restart. ST’s M0-3 architecture detects overtemperature at approximately 150°C or above, switching off the power stage to prevent thermal damage and restarting after sufficient cooling.
The VIPower architecture also supports rapid demagnetization of inductive loads such as motors and solenoids. ST documents an approximately 48V typical internal power-MOSFET clamp under specified inductive-load test conditions, allowing stored inductive energy to be dissipated during turn-off.
The device family is designed for harsh automotive environments with a temperature capability extending approximately from -40°C to +150°C. Typical applications include body electronics, lighting modules, motors, solenoids and other high-side automotive loads.
The VN920SP-E is now discontinued. ST technical support has officially confirmed that the device is obsolete and has no direct replacement, so VN920SPTR-E should be treated as a legacy component for existing BOMs and repair applications rather than a preferred device for new designs.
