The MCP2551T-E/SN from Microchip Technology is a high-speed CAN transceiver designed to interface a CAN protocol controller with the physical CAN bus. It provides differential transmit and receive capability and complies with ISO 11898 high-speed CAN physical-layer requirements, supporting data rates of up to 1Mbps and operation in 12V and 24V systems.

The MCP2551 operates from a 4.5V to 5.5V supply and provides three operating modes through the RS pin: High-Speed, Slope-Control and Standby. In slope-control mode, an external resistor can be used to control the CANH and CANL transition rates, helping reduce RFI and EMI emissions.

Integrated protection features include protection against CAN-bus short circuits to positive or negative battery voltage, high-voltage transient protection and automatic thermal shutdown. The device also provides permanent-dominant detection on the TXD input to prevent a faulty node from continuously driving the CAN bus. Up to approximately 112 nodes can be connected under the specified bus-loading conditions.

The MCP2551T-E/SN is supplied in an 8-pin SOIC package with tape-and-reel packaging. The E-temperature option is rated from -40°C to +125°C. Microchip currently identifies the MCP2551 as Not Recommended for New Designs and recommends the MCP2561 family for new designs.
