The STMicroelectronics SM6T30CAY is an automotive-grade bidirectional Transil™ transient voltage suppressor (TVS) diode designed to protect sensitive electronic circuits against voltage surges, load transients and electrostatic-discharge events.
The device belongs to ST’s SM6TY automotive TVS series and provides a peak pulse power capability of 600W with a 10/1000µs waveform. It can also withstand peak pulse power up to 4kW with an 8/20µs waveform under the specified test conditions.
For the SM6T30CAY, the reverse stand-off voltage is approximately 25.6V, while ST specifies a minimum breakdown voltage of 28.5V and a typical breakdown voltage around 30V. The maximum clamping voltage is 41.5V at a peak pulse current of 14.5A, helping limit damaging transient voltages before they reach downstream circuitry.
The C version is a bidirectional TVS, making it suitable for circuits where transient voltages may occur in either polarity. This is particularly useful in automotive and other electrically noisy environments.
ST uses planar technology to provide low leakage current and high-junction-temperature capability. The SM6TY series specifies leakage current as low as 0.2µA at 25°C and 1µA at 85°C, supporting long-term reliability in always-connected protection circuits.
The device is AEC-Q101 qualified for automotive applications. ST states that the SM6TY family is designed to protect automotive circuits against surges defined by ISO 7637-2 and electrostatic discharges according to ISO 10605.
The SM6T30CAY is supplied in a compact SMB / DO-214AA surface-mount package, with an operating junction-temperature range of -55°C to +150°C. Standard factory reel packaging is 2,500 pieces.
