The TPS54678RTER from Texas Instruments is a fully integrated 6A synchronous step-down SWIFT™ DC/DC converter operating from a 2.95V to 6V input range. The adjustable output range extends from 0.6V to 4.5V, making the device suitable for point-of-load power supplies for FPGAs, processors, DSPs, ASICs and other low-voltage digital loads.
The device uses current-mode control and integrates both high-side and low-side power MOSFETs. At a 5V BOOT-to-PH voltage, both MOSFETs feature only 12mΩ typical RDS(on), helping reduce conduction losses at the full 6A output current.
Switching frequency is programmable from 200kHz to 2MHz through the RT/CLK pin. External frequency synchronization is also supported from 300kHz to 2MHz, allowing designers to coordinate switching frequencies with other power rails or system clocks. Operation up to 2MHz enables the use of smaller inductors and capacitors for compact power designs.
The TPS54678 uses a precision 0.6V internal reference with ±1% accuracy over the -40°C to +150°C temperature range. Typical non-switching operating current is approximately 570µA, while shutdown current is only 1µA typical.
Integrated adjustable soft-start, sequencing and tracking simplify multi-rail power-system design. The converter also provides monotonic prebiased output start-up, allowing it to start safely when voltage is already present on the output rail.
An open-drain Power Good output monitors output regulation. PWRGD is asserted low when the feedback voltage falls below approximately 91% or rises above 105% of the nominal reference and releases after the feedback returns to approximately 93% to 103%.
Protection features include cycle-by-cycle current limiting, hiccup overcurrent protection, low-side current protection, reverse-current protection and thermal shutdown. The high-side current-limit threshold is approximately 10.5A typical, and thermal shutdown occurs at approximately 170°C typical.
The exact TPS54678RTER is supplied in a thermally enhanced 16-pin WQFN (RTE) package measuring only 3 × 3mm. The RTER option contains 3000 devices per large tape-and-reel, with NiPdAu terminal finish, MSL Level 2 at 260°C, and RoHS/REACH compliance. TI currently lists the exact ordering part as ACTIVE.
