The Texas Instruments LDC1612DNTR is a high-resolution 2-channel, 28-bit inductance-to-digital converter (LDC) designed for contactless inductive sensing applications such as position detection, metal proximity sensing, encoders and inductive touch interfaces.

The device works with external LC resonant sensors and supports a very wide 1kHz to 10MHz sensor-frequency range. This broad operating range allows designers to use a wide variety of inductors and capacitors, including compact PCB coils for space-constrained sensing systems.

With 28-bit measurement resolution, the LDC1612 provides high sensitivity to changes in the resonant sensor. TI specifies a sensing range extending beyond two coil diameters under suitable sensor and target conditions, making the device useful for non-contact displacement and proximity measurements.

The two measurement channels are well matched, enabling differential and ratiometric sensing. One channel can be used as a reference to help compensate for environmental and aging effects such as temperature, humidity and mechanical drift.

The LDC1612 supports remote sensor placement of more than 20cm from the converter under appropriate design conditions. This allows the sensing coil to be placed in harsh or space-constrained locations while the signal-processing IC remains on the main electronics board.

The device operates from a 2.7V to 3.6V supply and is optimized for low-power sensing systems. Typical low-power features include approximately 35µA sleep-mode current and 200nA shutdown current.

Configuration and measurement data are accessed through an I2C digital interface. The device also provides multiple reference-clock options, including an integrated internal reference clock for simplified designs and support for an external clock of up to 40MHz when higher system performance is required.

Unlike magnetic Hall-effect sensing techniques, inductive sensing with the LDC1612 is inherently immune to static DC magnetic fields and permanent magnets, which can be advantageous in industrial environments containing motors or magnetic components.

TI lists typical LDC1612 applications including encoders/event counters, inductive touch buttons and metal proximity detection. The technology can also be applied to linear or angular position sensing and other conductive-target detection systems.

The specific LDC1612DNTR ordering code uses a 12-pin WSON (DNT) package measuring 4 × 4mm. It is rated for operation from -40°C to +125°C and supplied in 4,500-piece Large Tape & Reel packaging. TI currently lists the exact LDC1612DNTR part number as ACTIVE.
