The Texas Instruments SN74HC595DR is a high-speed 8-bit serial-in, parallel-out shift register designed to expand digital output capability while using only a small number of MCU or processor control pins.

The device contains an 8-bit shift register connected to an 8-bit D-type storage register. Serial data is shifted into the device through the SER input, while the storage register allows updated data to be transferred to the eight parallel outputs simultaneously.

The shift register and storage register use separate clock inputs, allowing serial data to be loaded without immediately changing the output state. After the required 8-bit data has been shifted in, a storage-register clock pulse updates all parallel outputs together.

SN74HC595DR provides 3-state outputs, allowing its output pins to enter a high-impedance state through the OE control input. This feature is useful in shared-bus systems and applications where multiple devices may connect to the same signal lines.

A dedicated SRCLR direct-clear input allows the shift-register contents to be reset. The serial output can also be used to cascade multiple SN74HC595 devices, enabling expansion to 16, 24, 32 or more parallel outputs while maintaining a simple serial interface.

The device operates across a wide 2V to 6V supply range and supports clock frequencies up to 24MHz. At a 5V supply, it provides approximately ±6mA output drive capability, making it suitable for logic-level control and various digital-interface applications.

The SN74HC595DR is supplied in a 16-pin SOIC (D) surface-mount package. The R suffix indicates large tape-and-reel packaging for automated SMT assembly.
